Burnett, James, 1826-1872

Surveyor, arrived in Auckland on the 'Joseph Fletcher' in Oct 1852, accompanied by his mother, brother William and two sisters. The family were from Ovington, Northumberland and settled in Whangarei, but Burnett removed to Nelson in 1858 when he became Nelson Provincial Engineer. In 1860-1861 he joined Sir Julius von Haast on his West Coast expedition. Married Martha Jane Fletcher in 1851. See 'Early NZ engineers' by F W Furkert, p 127
