Provenance: A note in S P Smith's hand, 1899, says `This collection of waiata was given to me by W T Locke Travers in July 1899... apparently collected in the fifties and are in the handwriting of many of my old fellow officers in Auckland in 1859 ie William Baker, Henry Munro, John White, Piri Kawau and I think James Fulloon. The first part headed "Tradition" is in W Baker's bold handwriting- all the above were ripe Maori scholars'.
