Parkes, Henry (Sir), 1815-1896

Premier of New South Wales. He was born in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, England and emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1839. In 1859 Parkes established the `Empire' (newspaper) and in 1854 was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council. In May 1872 he became premier of New South Wales and was a leading figure in Australian politics until his death. He was closely involved in the movement to federate the Australian colonies.
