Ngati Whakaue; Anglican priest. Born probably in 1886 or 1877, in Ohinemutu, Rotorua. Sometimes known as Paora Ngatapu Temuera, Paora Temuera Tokoaitua, or Paora Tokoaitua. Elder son of Temuera Tokoaitua, a Ngati Whakaue Anglican Maori missionary, and his first wife, Tuihana Paora. Anglican clergyman at Rangiatea Church in Otaki. Description: Manihira Te Ra Purewa Royal, known as Hira, was born in Otaki in 1932, and has lived there all her life, except when at boarding school. Recalls belonging to the Takarore whanau, which includes the families Hohipuha, Raika, Te Waiata, and Nikora (Nicholls). Mentions the Te Horo cheese factory, the Rahui dairy factory, milk at school, and milk delivered in cans. Talks about school and boarding at Hukarere in Napier, her teachers, the principal, Miss Hunter, prayers, strictness, duties, other pupils. Mentions her 11 children, her whangai (foster) daughter and her brothers and sisters. Recalls leaving school in 1949, marrying in 1950, living on the marae, then on Miss Lochore's property. Mentions using a copper washer and an outside hand wringer. Talks about their home in Otaki, built using a Maori Affairs Loan in 1954, and later extended. Talks about the family benefit. Mentions her mother-in-law, Whakarato Royal, who lived with them for 26 years. Refers to the Otaki Maternity Home, where mothers rested for 14 days after birth. Refers to Playcentre involvement. Description: Contains diary entries by Keys re his travels through the Bay of Plenty and Horowhenua districts on business as a Native Land Agent; there are detailed descriptions of the countryside and towns which Keys travelled through, and discussions about the people he met; there are also discussions about Maori practices and customs that he encountered and his impressions of them. There are also notes about native flora and fauna and the liquor trade, and a number of photographs of people (mainly from Te Arawa and Ngati Raukawa), scenery and marae, taken by Keys according to the text (each is dated). Also contains copies of various manuscripts (in Maori) submitted to Keys by Maori informants, and information about the history of Rangiatea at Otaki Also includes stories, written in Maori, from the Ngati Raukawa tribe; "The story of Uenuku-kopako and Kapu- Manawawhiti"; "The death of Tukemata"; and a copy of a letter from Riapo Puhipi (Leopold Busby) about an exchange of gifts between Te Rauparaha and Poroa, a chief of Ahipara. Includes photographs of the old Otaki school house; Kahurangi Taipua; Raukawa meeting house (all on p.73), and Tungia Te Ao (pp.74 & 100).
