French explorer. Known for two voyages to discover the mythic southern `continent austral', the first one in 1772 and the second in 1772-1773. The Kerguelen Islands were discovered by him, and he claimed these to be part of the sought after southern land. In 1775, he was tried by the `Conseil de guerre' for misrepresentation and indiscretions. He later spent some time in jail. He was the author of `Relation des deux voyages dans les mers australes et des Indes, faits de 1771 a 1774' (1782).
