Te Rangihaeata was a leading warrior chief of the Ngati Toa. Te Rangihaeata, and his sister Te Rangi Topeora, were the only surviving children of their parents Waitohi (Ngati Toa-Ngati Raukawa), the elder sister of Te Rauparaha, and Te Rakaherea (Ngati Toa). Their other siblings were killed by Ngati Pou before Ngati Toa's departure from Kawhia. Te Rangihaeata participated in the early wars of the Ngati Toa in Kawhia during the early 19th century, the celebrated Amiowhenua expedition of circa 1819, and was one of the leaders in the migrations of Ngati Toa from Kawhia to Kapiti, circa 1821-23. He adopted the name Mokau after his infant son, Te Kauru-o-te-Rangi, was accidentally drowned in the Mokau river during these migrations. He championed the cause for retaining traditional Maori values during the period of early colonisation (1840s) and fought against European encroachment of Maori land. He also actively fought against European troops at Horokiwi, Wellington, over land disputes in the Wellington region. He is better remembered for the execution of European armed constabulary at Wairau in 1843 as compensation for the accidental shooting and death of his wife Te Rongo.
