Tasman, Abel Janszoon, 1603?-1659?

Mariner, explorer, landowner, trader. Dutch explorer and first European discoverer of New Zealand. Born probably in 1602 or 1603, at Lutjegast, near Groningen,Vriesland, The Netherlands. He died probably shortly before 22 October 1659, when his will was verified. See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p431-432)
