Durie, (Major), 1804-1874

Soldier, magistrate, collector of customs. Son of Charles Durie, late British and Hanoverian Consul-General at Christiania, Norway. Arrived in Wellington on the 'Adelaide', 7 March 1840. Appointed a captain in the Wellington Militia, 1845 and from the late 1840s was stationed at Waikanae as Resident Magistrate. In 1851 he was appointed Resident Magistrate, sub-collector of customs and commissioner of Crown Lands for Wanganui. See Scholefield's Dictionary of New Zealand Biography (1940), Vol. 1 p. 222-223.
