Ashworth, Edward, 1814-1896

Architect, artist and surveyor. Came from England in the brigantine Tuscan arriving in Auckland in October 1842. On arrival there was little work for architects and surveyors so he occupied himself as a drawing master and produced a number of sketches and watercolours of early Auckland. He was tutor to the children of (late) Governor William Hobson and Eliza Hobson in Auckland. He travelled up the Waikato and Waipa Rivers in December 1843, visiting mission stations among other sites. He left New Zealand early in 1844 arriving in Sydney on 15 February 1844. He spent 3 months in Sydney, moving on to Batavia (Djakarta) by June 1844, then Hong Kong, where he spent some months until at least August 1845, probably working, and Macau before returning to England. After his return to Devon he became the ecclesiastical architect attached to Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Museum has examples of his architectural drawings of Devon churches. He designed the chapel at Mt Peel (drawings in Canterbury University plan collection) because Acland's brother was a vicar associated with Exeter Cathedral and arranged for Ashworth to do the design. Buried at Exeter. (Information about Ashworth's New Zealand career from his journals. Information about his post-New Zealand career from Thelma Strongman, Canterbury University Library, May 2000, pers. comm.) The Library purchased a large collection of his work from Sotheby's 20 June 1966, lot 183.
