Te Rauparaha, Tamihana, 1819-1876

Ngati Toa leader, evangelist, writer, sheepfarmer, assessor. The only surviving son of Te Rauparaha and his second wife Akau, who was a widow of a Ngati Raukawa chief, Hape te Tuarangi. Tamihana te Rauparaha was educated at the Church Mission School at Te Waimate [Waimate North] and at St John's College, Tamaki. He became the first Maori catechist and lay preacher of the Church of England. In October 1839, Tamihana te Rauparaha and his cousin Matene te Whiwhi (with whom he was later to found the Maori King Movement) went to Waimate to request a missionary for the Kapiti-Waikanae district. As a result, Octavius Hadfield arrived in Otaki in 1840. In 1850, Tamihana travelled with Archdeacon William Williams to England, arriving in 1851 and returning, July 1852, in the Slains Castle. Te Rauparaha was also a correspondent to Donald McLean.
