Evans, G S, 1800-1868

Barrister. Took high honours at Cambridge University in Sanskrit, ordained minister in 1827 and called to the Bar in 1837. He helped form the New Zealand Association, and was designated judge for the first settlement, landing in Wellington in 1840, on the 'Adelaide'. Married twice, his second wife being Harriet Strouther (1789?-1866; widow of Daniel Riddiford). See DNZB / Scholefield (Vol 1, p232-233). He compiled a Maori grammar in 1839 and was purchaser of New Zealand Company sections. Buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington.
