The Right Honourable Sir William Fox, KCMG. Born 20 January 1812 and died 23 June 1893. Explorer, politician, social reformer, journalist and amateur artist. Arrived in Wellington on George Fyfe in 1842 with his wife, Sarah Halcomb. First editor of the NZ Gazette. Explored Wairarapa and Nelson as agent for the NZ Company which he later assisted in winding up. Member of Parliament for Wanganui and Rangitikei 1855-1881; Prime minister in 1856, 1861-1862, 1863-1864, 1869-1872 and 1873. Knighted in 1879. See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p134-138).
