Mein Smith, William, 1799-1869
Artist, surveyor, runholder. Born Cape Town, and served in England, Canada and Gibraltar. Appointed Surveyor-General to the New Zealand Company in 1839, arriving in Wellington in January 1840 aboard the ship 'Cuba'. His family followed on the 'Adelaide'. Laid out the first settlement at Petone and the site of Wellington. Took part in political life after settling down in the Wairarapa. See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p399-400)
