Swainson, William, 1789-1855

Prominent natural historian and botanist who, after a career of scientific literary work, emigrated to New Zealand 1841, settling in the Hutt Valley. His home was named Hawkshead. Left for Australia, working for the NSW government 1851/52, then moving to Victoria 1852/53 and Tasmania 1853/54. Returned to New Zealand and the Hutt Valley 1854.
