Pokai, Hone Heke, -1850

Of Ngapuhi, most prominent Bay of Islands chief, descendant of Rahiri. Born at Pakaraka 1807 or 1808. Missionary education, disliked steady pakeha encroachment on Maori mana and land. Led many chiefs to sign (Maori version) Treaty of Waitangi. Fought against British militia in New Zealand War 1844-1847, beat trained British soldiers in three battles.
