Dieffenbach, Ernest, 1811-1855, Dieffenbach, Ernst, 1811-1855

Explorer, naturalist, linguist, writer. Born in Giessen, Germany, he became a political refugee in 1835 and travelled to London, where he became surgeon and naturalist for the New Zealand Company. Sailed to Wellington on the Tory in 1839. Made many trips to the interior of the North Island and the Chatham Islands. Returned to London in 1841, and to Giessen in 1849. Wrote extensively on New Zealand and on its geology. Married Katharina Emilie (née Reuning). See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869)
