Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865

Artist, surveyor, engineer. Principal Surveyor for the New Zealand Company and artist. Born probably in 1809 or 1810 in England. Resident in Wellington between 1842 and 1845. Published Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). See DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869). After spending several years in London, Brees moved to Australia, working in Victoria and New South Wales as a surveyor and engineer. By 1864 (the year he left Australia, dying on board ship shortly before reaching England) he was based in Pitt Street, Sydney.
