Ballance, John (Hon), 1839-1893

Newspaper proprietor and editor, politician, premier. Born in Northern Ireland and came to New Zealand in 1865. Founded 'Wanganui Herald' in 1867. Liberal Member of Parliament for Rangitikei 1875-1879, and for Wanganui 1879-1881 and 1884-1893. Prime Minister 1891-1893. Married Fanny Taylor who died in 1868. In 1870, he married Ellen Anderson, second daughter of David Anderson, merchant of Wellington. In 1886 they adopted Ellen's niece, Florence Anderson, whom they rechristened Kathleen.
