Hughes, Jackie, 1866-1954
Law clerk, military leader. Rank: Lieutenant-Colonel. Served South African War with the 1st and 10th Contingents, having enlisted as a private in the 1st Contingent, earning a DSO; also CMG, VD. Rose to be Lieutenant-Colonel, commanding the Canterbury Battalion at Gallipoli in 1915. He was also President of the 1st NZMR Association. Local organiser for the New Zealand Welfare League, and sub-agent for the British Motor Union Insurance and British General Insurance Companies.
