Labour MP for Roskill, 1981-1990 and 1993-1996 and for New Lynn from 1996. Minister of Housing, 1984-1987, Minister for the Environment, 1986-1987, Minister of Employment, 1987-1989, Minister of Youth Affairs, 1987-1989, Minister of Tourism, 1987-1988. Minister of Education. Lecturer in Political Studies, Auckland Institute of Technology 1990-1993. From 1999 Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister of Justice 1999-2008. Leader of the Labour opposition from 2008. Personal papers held at Archives New Zealand.
