Domett, Alfred (Hon), 1811-1887

Journalist, politician, public servant, premier, writer. Nelson settler, politician and friend of Robert Browning. Author of 'Ranulf' and 'Amohia'. Son of naval officer Nathaniel Domett and a lawyer, he published collections of his poetry in 1833 and 1835. He was a student at St John's College Cambridge, 1829-1833, but left without taking his degree. Visited Canada and the USA in 1834. Arrived in Nelson in August 1842. Began writing for the `Nelson Examiner' in 1843 after the Wairau Affray. Married Mary George in 1856. Elected MP for Nelson 1855 and Premier 1862-1863. Retired from Parliament in 1866, continued in his role as Head of Crown Lands Office, and returned to England 1872. Awarded the CMG (Companion of the order of St Michael & St George). See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869). Used the Māori name of Tomete.
