Journalist, politician, premier, writer. Prime Minister and author; Member of Parliament (1863-1876, 1884-1889); Colonial Treasurer (1869-1875, 1876, 1884-1887); Colonial Secretary (1875-1876); Prime Minister (1873-1875, 1876, 1884-1887). Received the CMG in 1872, and the KCMG in 1875. See DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869, p563-566). Personal papers held at Archives New Zealand.
