Ward, Joseph George (Rt Hon Sir), 1856-1930

Merchant, politician, prime minister. Liberal Member of Parliament for Awarua 1887-1919, and for Invercargill 1925-1930; Minister of Finance and Prime Minister 1906-1912 and 1928-1930. Was appointed a KCMG during the royal visit of 1901. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p565-569, W9). The first New Zealander to receive an hereditary English title.
