Whiteley, John, 1806-1869

Wesleyan missionary. Born Nottinghamshire, arrived at the Bay of Islands in May 1833. Worked at Mangungu Mission Station, Hokianga, then at Kawhia. In 1854 he moved to Auckland and in 1856 went to Taranaki, becoming principal of the Grey Institution, a mission school for Maori children. Killed in the White Cliffs Massacre (Pukearuhe, Taranaki), February 13th, 1869.
