Soldier, artist and author. Born Madeira. Arrived Auckland from Madrid on 4 January 1864 as ensign in 68th Durham Light Infantry. Was present at Gate Pa and Te Ranga, Tauranga, 1864. Left New Zealand for England with his regiment in 1865, but continued to paint and draw portraits of Maori, images of moko and scenes relating to the war and to Maori culture for many years. Published Moko: or Maori tattooing, London, 1896, and Pounamu: notes on New Zealand greenstone in London in 1915. Many of his drawings were used as sources for wood engravings in the Illustrated London news and Graphic in the mid-1860s and later. He retired as a Major-General in London in 1887 (Sources: Platts, Una. Nineteenth century New Zealand artists, a guide and handbook; Dictionary of New Zealand biography, edited by G H Scholfield (Wellington, 1940))
