Te Āti Awa ki Waikanae

Te Ateawa Ki Whakarongotai, Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai, Whakarongotai

Comprises members of various hapu, or sub-tribes, of the Te Ati Awa (Ngati Awa) from Taranaki who elected to stay at Waikanae when Wi Kingi Te Rangitaake and other chiefs returned to Taranaki in 1848. Also includes the descendants of Metaapere Te Waipuna-a-hau of the Ngati Toa tribe, to whom the land was formerly returned when they departed. There is only one whare runanga in the Waikanae district which is situated behind the main shopping mall at Waikanae near the railway station, its name is Whakarongotai.
