Ngati Toa Rangatira
Toa Rangatira was a direct descendant of Hoturoa, commander of the canoe Tainui, and ancestor of the the Ngati Toa tribe. He was the youngest son of the chief Korokino, of Ngati Mango, and his wife Tuwhareiti, daughter of Mutunga of Ngati Mutunga (Taranaki). The Ngati Toa became the dominant group in the greater Kawhia district and essentially superceeded the older tribal name of Ngati Mango. Toa Rangatira was recognised as a courageous and astute leader in war, and his counsel and wisdom respected in times of peace.
