- Description
Portrait, probably a proof of that appearing in George French Angas' "The Kaffirs illustrated" (London, Hogarth, 1849). Shows George French Angas standing resting his left elbow on a seaside rock. He holds a sketchbook and pencil, and there is an open paintbox on the rocks in the right foreground, beside an arum lily plant. Angas holds a military cap in his left hand, and wears a dark jacket of light-coloured waistcoat and trousers, with a knotted cravat at his collar.
The portrait was made in London. Angas was acquainted with the family of William Williams and several of this family were drawn by Baugniet. The owner of this proof print is a descendant of the Williams family.
