Binding: 18th century red straight-grained morocco, upper and lower covers tooled in gold with a wide border, corner ornaments and diamond-shaped centrepiece made of small tools; spine gold tooled in decorated compartments; gold tooled edges and turn-ins; marbled endpapers; gilt text edges; blue silk bookmark; endpapers watermarked with fleur-de-lis (similar to Heawood 1743). Provenance: ownership inscription on flyleaf: Presented to His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester by his most obliged and dutiful servant Constantine John Phipps; armorial stamp, (18th century stylised lozenge-shaped) of C.B. Walsingham; bookplate of Alexander H. Turnbull. Acc. 770.
