BISHOP SEI/WYN. George August Selwyn was appointed first Bishop ai New Zealand in 1842. He was at that time thirty-four years of age, and curate at Windsor. Young, highly-trained in body as in mind, never did any man more fully and completely justify his election to an office as arduous as it was heroic. To a deep spiritual insight and inspiration Bishop Selwyn added vigorous common sense, and the ineffable gift of a winning manner and splendid physique (Otago Witness, 21 December 1904)
