Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. The river mouth at Oroua; the grounds of the Wanganui Race Course (with white swans on the lake; a woman feeding a peacock, and a woman under an umbrella, walking on rail tracks beside the sea at Castlecliff; followed by three views from a boat on the Whanganui River, one a view of Upokongaro, with the church spire just visible, and two of groups of Maori waiting on the riverbank. Miss Christine Little - The Donovan story

Description: The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year. Description: The essay traces the lives of Isaac and Frances Fletcher. Isaac was a coastguard in Kent, and rather than give evidence against friends he fled home and enlisted at Chathan with 58th Regiment in 1844 arriving in Sydney in 1845 and coming to New Zealand in 1847. He bought his discharge in 1849. His wife Frances Bateman had emigrated to New Zealand with friends arriving on the Victory in 1851. The couple were married in 1853 and settled in Onehunga. They raised a large family. Isaac followed a mariner's life, Frances nursed, taught many to read and write and helped Dr Purchas. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Finding Aids: Published guide available.
