There are a number of Auckland buildings; the Greenhouse in the Domain, the University, and the Museum. There is a sequence of views of a thermal area and three photographs of Maori. Description: Lantern slides of gardens and related subjects taken ca 1930s-1950s. Five slides are labelled as being taken by William Williams in Christchurch during the 1930s, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Views of various gardens, flower beds, and trees. Also associated buildings and garden features including steps, ornamental borders, ponds, large pools, streams, bridges, pathways, the rock garden at Windlesham Moor, and a band rotunda. - Four images of Abbotsford Park in Gloucestershire, England. - Six images of gardens in Christchurch taken by William Williams between 1933 and 1937 (with labels giving the addresses). Another image shows the greenhouse at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. - Aerial views of two extensive formal gardens. One image shows gardens around a castle with moat, possibly in Holland. - Delphinium trial garden bed with sign, identifying it as held by "R H S" [Royal Horticultural Society?] and the British Delphinium Society. - Eleven images appear to be from commercial series. Nine feature drawings relating to garden design; the others show water lilies and a circular floral 'clock'. - Another series show plant portraits in garden settings, including at Windsor Great Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Description: Interview with Bruce Alan Corlett born Palmerston North, 26 April 1962. Mentions his father Selwyn and mother Marlene are both still living on the family farm. Refers to marrying his wife Debbie and their two children Melissa and Nathan, and mentions that he will not encourage his son to follow him in the business. Describes how his grandfather began the dairy farm in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Discusses how he decided to continue the family farm with more intensive land use, although some dairying continued until his father retired. Outlines building glasshouses and growing tomatoes, and discusses heating the glasshouses to extend the growing season. Mentions gradual deterioration of the soil in the glasshouses and trying other culture media, eventually using hydroponics. Describes growing other crops outside, and propagating their own seedlings. Discusses switching from tomatoes to growing lettuce hydroponically year-round. Refers to packaging and transport of produce, and pest control. Outlines the long hours he worked, especially in the early days of growing. Discusses the Otaki District Commercial Gardeners Society and mentions that it has now declined in importance. Talks about the future of market gardening and the difficulty for young people to get started. Description: Shows Weld's third New Zealand home "Brackenfield" near Amberley with his wife and two oldest children in the foreground. A horse is beside Mrs Weld and the two children. The house and garden look newly established with clumps of cabbage trees and flaxes in flower and flower gardens closer to the house. There is a conservatory to the right of the house and another building, probably a barn, to the far right. To the left of the house is a small chapel. The Welds married in March 1859, so the two children, two-and-a half years later are likely to be the two oldest. Weld purchased the initial 304 acres of land for Brackenfield in July 1861. The 16-room kauri house, its timber shipped from Auckland, was demolished in 1964. Weld also laid out the park-like grounds and imported English deer and game birds. The chapel, one of the first Catholic churches in Canterbury, was moved from the Brackenfield entrance in the 1950s to the main road through Amberley Other Titles - Amberley Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Brackenfield N Z F.A.W.
