Description: Charles Yates Fell photograph album. Many of the photographs taken by C Y Fell. Album created as a memory for relative, Alice Blake (nee Richmond), including portraits and group portraits of family and friends; scenes of holidays around the Totaranui, Abel Tasman National Park area; and the homes of the Richmond family (Fairfield) and the Fell family (St John's) in Nelson. One image shows all the members of the New Zealand House of Representatives 3rd Parliament in 1851 (Most are named). Many of the images are of festive occasions with large family gatherings, including Xmas parties and costumes for a fancy-dress ball at Totaranui (January 1890). Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: Photographs of: a group of people gathered to watch sports on the Queen's Birthday in Tonga including Seddon; a view of the coast at Cape Foulwind; a letter addressed to "Sire Sedone, Pirima, Neuseland" from Niue; a gathering of Tongans outside a marquee in Nuku'alofa for the Queen's birthday celebrations; Seddon and what are probably other parliamentarians standing on the steps of a building; a large totara; the Seddon family on a visit to the state schoolhouse in Levuka, Fiji; the Seddon family gathered round an ornately framed certificate noting Seddon's achievements; Huka Falls taken by the Burton Brothers; Seddon holding a taiaha seated in a group of seven working men; the recreation ground in New Plymouth looking towards Mount Taranaki; two portraits of Samoan girls; a cart travelling on the Cable Bay Road looking out over the bay taken by Tyree Studio; Lake Taupo from Motutere taken by Burton Brothers; and a group of men, possibly including Seddon, sitting and standing on the steps of a building. Description: Album compiled by Les Cleveland containing photographs of, and relating to, Charleston, West Coast, taken between circa 1860s and circa 1970s. Mainly prints, made by Cleveland, from copy negatives of originals taken circa 1870s by an unidentified photographer. A few are prints made from original negatives taken by Cleveland in 1963 and circa 1970s. Album is extensively annotated with names and information about the area. Prints chiefly show buildings (schools, pubs, mines) and people, but there are also some landscapes and images of gravestones. Includes a miner's right and newspaper clippings. Quantity: 1 album(s). Physical Description: Photograph album with red leather cover Provenance: The copy negatives, from which many of the prints were made, were held by Cleveland in 2013. They were found in the back of a cupboard in the original European Hotel building in Charleston. They may have been made by a local Westport postcard photographer. Cleveland went to Charleston in the 1960s with TV One documentary makers and he thinks they found the negatives, which were then passed to him.
