West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump. Other images (and series of images) of note include scenes from the Kumara races; environmental damage (slips and road works at Milford Tunnel, Inangahua River road, and Haast and Jackson's Bay area; open face coal mining at Charleston; deer hunting, largely based in Mussel Point; Central Otago Hotels (Cardrona, White Horse, and Vulcan); Post Offices and boxes (St Bathan's, Outram, Ophir, and Dunedin) and a Pacific Films crew on Fox Glacier. Also includes images of James Heveldt's grave (Jackson's Bay), Peregrine Vinyard, a new house in Bannockburn, a girl in a Westport ice cream parlour, women in a Carter's Sawmill shop, a Hokitika cake stall, and various shop fronts and signage in Dunedin, Gore, and on the West Coast. Description: Shows men unloading barrels and other large packages from a boat which is pulled up on the river bank. Two horses close to the packages on the near bank. Christy (Christian Mindermann, a German) ran the river boat for many years and kept an accommodation house and store. A scene on the West bank of the Ingangahua River about a mile upstream of Inangahua Landing. The place depicted was known at the time of depiction as Emmanuel's Flat. 'Cristy' was Mr Christian Mindermann, who kept an accommodation house and store at Inangahua Junction and was its first postmaster. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 254 x 365 mm Processing information: This watercolour was catalogued with a suggested date of 1865, until a record of William Fox's visit to Inangahua Landing in late February 1872 was found in the Grey River Argus.
