Description: Comparison between the treatment of the captains of the Italian cruiseship 'Costa Concordia' and the container ship 'Rena'. Both ships have run aground recently, the 'Rena' on the Astrolabe Reef off the Tauranga coast and the 'Costa Concordia' on rocks off the Tuscan coast. The Concordia's captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest suspected of causing the accident by steering too close to shore, and faces charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation was complete. In New Zealand the captain and second officer of the 'Rena' face charges - under Section 65 of the Maritime Act, covering dangerous activity involving ships or maritime products - that carry a penalty of up to a year imprisonment or a fine up to $10,000.
