Date: 1956

From: Lodge, Nevile Sidney 1918-1989 :[Archive of original cartoons for the Evening Post and Sports Post, 1941 to 1988]

Reference: B-137-195

Description: A man with the letters,'W.R.F.U' (Wellington Rugby Football Union) on his jacket bangs a nail into the wall on which he intends to hang 'The shield' (Ranfurly Shield) for the year 1956. A rugby player stands behind him proudly holding the shield but just behind him an auk (Auckland) pokes its head through the door and in the second scene, siezes the shield and makes off with it leaving the man with the hammer and the rugby player in a state of great consternation. Refers to the Ranfurly shield which was won from Canterbury by Wellington September 22, 1956. This cartoon is probably the one drawn to be published if Wellington then lost the Shield to Auckland in a challenge a week later - in fact Wellington won, 9-6, so this cartoon would not have been published. Top left is a label bearing the words, '"The Evening Post", September 29th..1956' Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Physical Description: Ink and letratone on card, 562 x 382 mm
