Description: Shows a fine detailed view of the town of Wanganui, from across the river. Shows settlers' houses, the Christ Church, and the Rutland and York (incorrectly noted as 'Fort') stockades on the hill mounds above the town. The Gun-boat stockade, on the site of Mouta Gardens, seems to have been demolished, although the fencing is still in place. A two-masted sailing ship is visible on the river, with a dinghy tied to it, along with a fully-manned waka and a smaller canoe. Two figures sit on the bank in the foreground, their backs to the viewer. A tall flagstaff stands on the hill behind the York stockade Attributed by the auction house to Captain William Mein Smith, but this is probably incorrect. By comparison, it could possibly have been drawn by Thomas Bernard Collinson, 1822-1902, who was employed to build the Rutland stockade. The Library holds other views of Wanganui by Collinson from around the same time (at A-292-001/080). Although the handwriting does not match, the drawing styles are very similar Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Wanganui New Zealand / Jan 10 1848 / Fort Stockade / Rutland Stockade [in ink] Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
