Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned. Description: Shows a view from inside a fence with a cart or plough on the near side of it, looking west northwest from the position of the Purewa Cemetery towards the Orakei Peninsula, the Orakei Basin and in the distance the hill of Parnell with a church (St Pauls' with the spire completed) on top of it. There are two small sailing ships (Selwyn's 'Flying Fish' and 'Marian' and a yacht off the Orakei point, and a group of huts ("Okahu N. Village") at the far right above the stream that flows into the Basin. St Paul's Church was built in 1843 but did not acquire the spire seen in this picture until a year or two later. Description: A scene with with a waterfront road, a breakwater and jetty. Between Mechanics Bay in the foreground and Commercial Bay in the background where several ships are anchored, is a distinctive high mound, the end of the Britomart promontory. On top of the headland at the left is a church (St Pauls) with a red wooden spire. To its right is the Albert Barracks. Below this is Emily Place. Ships' masts in the background are those moored at Queen's Wharf St Paul's Church was demolished in 1884, so the picture shows a scene before that date. The breakwater in Mechanics Bay dates from the 1870s. The mound shown is the end of Britomart Point with a road cut through on its left. This cutting was made around 1875, part of the reclamation of land and cutting a road through Britomart Point. The remaining mound was demolished over the next few years. Quantity: 1 oil(s). Description: Auckland City from Mechanics Bay (now Stanley Street). The houses on the cliff in the middle distance mark the southern end of Official Bay. A flag flies on Point Britomart and on the higher ground to the left are St Paul's, the Barracks and the business enterprises at the top of Shortland Crescent. Government House lies in the sheltered hollow on the left. The complete spire on St Paul's suggests the painting was done after March 1844, the date of completion of the spire.
