Description: Map of South Island, south of Kaikoura and including Stewart Island, and not drawn to scale. Shows harbours, rivers, lakes, Maori tracks, boundaries of the New Zealand Company's land purchase of the Canterbury Region; includes descriptive notes on areas of land such as 'very extensive grass plains'. Note on map before copying: 'Kaiapoi is the southern boundary of the Nelson Block'. Includes many Maori placenames. Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Notes describe some topographic features. See also "A treatise on practical surveying" by Arthur Whitehead, 1848 (Exeter: A. Whitehead, ca.1848). Held NZ&P Collection, P 526.9 WHI 1848. Description: Geological sketch of the middle and southern part of the South Island, from Mantell's route from Akaroa to Kaiapoi, south along the coast to Dunedin and return by sea. Names (mostly in Maori) rivers, coastal areas and lakes. Stuarts (Stewart) Island is shown. Shows Maori tracks from interior lakes to the coast, with travel times in days. Marks 'wahi pounamu', route of the author's track, and the boundary of the land block purchased by Commissioner Henry Tacy Kemp, JP. Also marks rock type as per reference key, including slate and quartz conglomerate, limestone, diluvial, tertiary and green gritty marl. Description: Topographical, exploratory map of the western part of the North Island from Taranaki southwards to Wellington, Cook Stait, and the northern part of the South Island, to Hokitika and Banks Peninsula. Shows the Taranaki, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough regions, with placenames, contours, coloured shading and some nautical information. Includes detailed notes about the exploration at the bottom of the map, however this text is not legible. Includes 14 aerial insets on the map, including the harbour of Otago, Port Nicholson, Nelson Haven, Waitohi Bay, D'Urville Harbour, ?West Harbour, Victoria Haven (some illegible), and 14 cross-section insets of coastline areas. Description: Wrongly attributed to Kettle, this Hamilton map attributed to Charles Kettle, of part of the South Island, from Kaikoura southwards and including Stewart Island, (not drawn to scale). Shows harbours, rivers, lakes, Maori tracks, and the southern boundary of the New Zealand Company's land purchase of the Canterbury Region, from Kaiapoi, southwards to Milford Sound and eastwards to Molineux (Molyneux) Bay. Includes descriptive notes on areas of land such as 'very extensive grass plains'. Includes some Maori placenames. Shows Otakou Settlement. Written on map: The red figures denote the number of Natives [(Maori), and showing a total of 1150 along the East Coast including Stewart Island] Written on map: Kaiapoi is the southern boundary of the Nelson Block Written on map: Reproduction of a photographic copy held by the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, MapColl-834atc/1849-50/Acc.1379 (a copy of an original map drawn on H.M.S. Description: Shows a map of the coastline with the following labelled rivers emptying into the sea: Hurunui, Te Kawa, Waipara, Te Kohai (two branches), Akaaka, Rakahuri, Kaiapoi, Kawari, Korotuaheka, W[ai]makariri, Puhererekanui, Otaroro [the Avon River, fed by] Wairarapa, Waimaru, Rakipawa. The Estuary is described as Opawa. Also shows Waiau, Motunau Island, Port Cooper, Port Levy (spelt Levi) and Pigeon Bay. A track is marked along the beach from Hurunui River mouth to Te Kawa, with short sea voyages noting approximate mileage to Waipara, Kaiapoi, with the pa indicated, Waimakariri, the Estuary, and Port Cooper.
