Crump, Douglas :Photographs of the Second World War

Description: This album was compiled by Second Lieutenant Spencely Noel Stanley Crump. It is a record of his time as a soldier in the New Zealand army during the Second World War. The record begins with photographs taken while training at Ngaruawahia Camp in September 1939. He and his company were transported to Egypt on the "Orion" where they underwent training at Maadi Camp. Also recorded are the rest and recreational facilities at the camp, as well as those at Helwan Camp, and trips to the pyramids. In 1940 he was with the army campaigning and preparing defences in the Western Desert. He was also sent to the Middle East Weapon Training School in Sarafand near Tel Aviv of which there are photographs as well as others of Palestine and Jerusalem. In 1941 he was sent to Greece and Crete. This part of the album also contains a page of photographs taken from a captured German paratrooper's camera. Following the campaigns in Greece and Crete, Crump returned to Egypt and took part in the war in Libya. There are several pages of photographs of Cairo and its citizens. Others are of nurses and patients at the British General Hospital at Geneifa, and the New Zealand General Hospital at Helwan where Crump went as a result of contracting pneumonia and developing infections in his wounds. In 1942 he returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship "Oranji". There are five pages of photographs taken on this trip. In New Zealand he was sent to the Soldiers Hospital in Rotorua for treatment. In 1943 he married. The album is well documented throughout, and most of Crump's many military associates are identified. A container of letters written by Crump while he was overseas was also donated with the album. The letters have been transferred to Manuscripts and Archives. In 1934 Spencely Noel Stanley Crump was a member of the New Zealand team to the Empire Games in London where he won a bronze medal in swimming. Description: Photograph album relating to Henry Beresford Maunsell's service during World War I, with the NZ Army 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles Regiment in Egypt. Many of the military personnel are identified, a few with later dates added noting when some of the men photographed in the album were killed in action. The first part of the album shows soldiers leaving on board HMNZ troopship 'Orari' 14 October 1914, the trip through Hobart, Colombo, Aden, Port Said until disembarkation in Alexandria December 1914. Many scenes show the shipboard stabling for horses used by Mounted Rifle troops; others show various ships they passed on the way. The latter part shows various military scenes in Egypt, including The New Zealand Corps camp near Cairo; swimming horses crossing the Nile; Red Cross Vauxhall ambulance; groups of soldiers riding camels; horse lines; and a line of horses at drinking troughs. Description: Four photograph albums compiled by Robert Henry (Harry) Fulton relating to his World War I service between 1916-1919 with New Zealand 12th Reinforcements, and with the New Zealand Army Service Corps (NZASC) based at New Zealand Base Kit Stores unit at Sling Camp, Bulford, England. Many photographs taken by Fulton. Some prints are taken by other unknown photographers as indicated by caption 'loaned negatives', and as they show campaigns, such as Gallipoli, in which Fulton did not serve. Images show his time with the 12th Reinforcements; from the journey from New Zealand on HMNZT 'Ulimaroa' and 'Ivernia' troop ships to Egypt in 1916, camp life in England as part of the NZASC, and activities whilst on leave during wartime and post war. Particularly shows family and home in Ireland and sight-seeing photographs from around Egypt and Great Britian, including New Zealand soldiers at Stonehenge. Prints have captions on the album pages; some images are inscribed on the print. Fulton has often arranged images of unrelated locations and activities on individual album pages. Description: Photographs of World War II servicemen and air cadets from the collection of airman Stuart Jones. Taken circa 1939-1945 by a range of photographers, some of whom are identified. - A series of studio portraits taken by Universal Studios (Dunedin) show air cadets in uniform. Don T Curtis of Wangui [Wanganui?], R Collins of Mata-mata [Matamata], M Walton of Wairoa, B Campbell of Auckland, K [Waterdale?], Noel Price [or Pine?], and Jones are identified on the rear of the prints in which they appear. Also includes two photographs of larger groups of cadets taken by photographer Gordon J McCusker (Blenheim), one of which is mounted on card and the other which is signed on the rear by a number of cadets. Also contains a studio portrait showing a soldier posed in front of a pyramid backdrop. - Servicemen and cadets are also photographed in uniform in informal settings. Photographs include "The Gang" outside Ezbekeih Garden in Cairo, a series of images of men in a bush or jungle setting [Pacific campaign?], an image of a large group sitting in a valley captioned "Sit down strike delta", socialising (including one image where men are dressed as women), and soldier Pat Sharpin in uniform in front of a house and in a garden [in New Zealand?]. - Stuart Jones is identified on the rear of a portrait of two cadets but it is not certain which of the two men is Jones. The blond man who may be Jones appears in numerous photographs. This man may also be Noel Price [or Pine?]. Documents the life and military service of Sergeant Ivan F Moore (Service Number 7/1023), who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt and the Balkans during World War One. Volume is illustrated with facsimile reproductions of letters, photographs, postcards, military documents, newspaper cuttings, and printouts from online sources. Description: The collection includes two different sets of photographs. The first is the photographs from the collection of Thomas Vernon Mitchell taken while he was serving in the army in the Middle East in the Second World War. They include tourist scenes of the ancient olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane; the city of the dead in Cairo; street scenes in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Aleppo; tombs of the caliphs in Cairo; the Dead Sea; the tower of King David, Jerusalem; the Hotel Yarkon, Tel Aviv; the citadel entrance, Aleppo; and Tiberias Hot Springs. Other images are a 24th Battalion chuch parade in February 1941, two views of Mitchell's grave, the effects of a sandstorm on a military camp in the desert, Mitchell and his friends on rickshaws, Papakura infantry at Trentham in October 1940, and the 24th Battalion party at Cairo 1941. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. The album comprises: Photographs collected during the cruise of the Flying Squadron, under the command of Rear Admiral G T Phipps Hornby, during 1869-1870, which carried HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Included are views of Plymouth, Portsea, Madeira, Brazil (Bahia and Rio de Janiero), South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Japan, British Columbia, Hawaii and Chile.
