Description: Views of a trip along the Whanganui River with views of Paranui kainga (listed as Parinui in the album), showing groups of whare, groups of Maori, various activities in the kainga, canoes on the river, and many scenes of waterfalls along the river. These include Taraipokiore (or Tarei-po-Kiore), Otuitu Falls, Ohura Falls, Kakahi Falls. The "Ladder scene", copy of Denton photograph, and other views of the Whanganui River and Ohura River. There is a gap in the album, followed by a separate sequence on Napier. These images include panoramic views of Napier from various locations, church buildings (including exterior and interior views of St John's Cathedral), hotel buildings and other public buildings and memorial statues. Description: Three photographs, possibly all taken by Charles Sorrell in 1906. View overlooking Napier with Ashton's Cabinet Works in foreground and Clive Square in the middle distance. Opposite Ashton's Cabinet Works is a large open space and children at play. Several churches can be seen (Trinity Methodist Church and St Patrick's Catholic Church); Caledonian Hotel and Provincial Hotel; and a primary school near Clive Square. Tennyson Street is in the lower lefthand corner and Emerson Street runs parallel to it in the middle distance. Napier Technical School, a large two-storey brick building. Description: Album owned by Joseph Rhodes containing photographs and sketches and ephemera dated between 1860s-1880s of New Zealand and overseas. Includes photographs of Hawkes Bay dated between 1860s-1870s. Many of the sketches were drawn by Alfred Chapman, one section containing an illustrated tale "The life and adventures of Thomas Pinniger" (p 34a-d). On p 34b Governor Eyre is pictured lower left at Government House, Wellington. There are two photographs of paintings by Charles Barraud (one of Te Aro Flat, City of Wellington (p 68), and one of Wellington Heads (p 104). Many of the photographs of the Hawke's Bay area show the houses on various sheep stations, including Clive Grange Station, and Spring Hill Station (Joseph Rhodes), Maraekakaho Station (Donald Mclean), Woburn Station (Thomas Purvis Russell), Mount Herbert Station (Henry Robert Russell), and Mangatarata Station (Donald Gollan). There is also one of George Fannin's house in Napier, one of the Reverend Hamlin's mission station at Wairoa, and one of The Grange (Wellington home of Joseph Rhodes's brother William Barnard Rhodes).Others in the area are related to military encampments, barracks, stockades, and mission stations. On page 31 there is a photograph of "The great peace meeting, 1863", and one entitled "Whaka & tribe". On page 53, the caption reads "Donald McLean Esq. Superintendent, Hawkes Bay, purchasing Wairoa from the natives, 18[55?]." There are many photographs, postcards and tourist scenes taken in Egypt, Ireland, Norway, Italy and Australia. The Australian scenes show views in Queensland, including Australian Aborigines fishing for dugong, the Railway Mortuary Chapel at the Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney (subsequenlty sold to a church group, dismantled and rebuilt in North Ainslie in Canberra) and views in the Maryborough area. Description: Shows a group of houses in middle distance, at the foot of a hill, beyond a narrow foreground road (later Hastings Street) and a tussock-covered plain. There are also two smaller buildings near the top of the hill. The caption identifies the lower row of houses along the street as, from left R. Colenso - Registered Deeds Office, Harris, Tiffen, the Herald Office, T. Anderson, Sealy, Rev. Marshall, and on the far right, the Lands Office..
