Description: Head and shoulders profile portrait of an unidentified Maori youth, attending Charles Reay's school for Maori students, which opened in Nelson in April 1843 The young man may possibly be Tamati Tikao (also known as Tamati Pukurau) of Ngai Tahu, who studied with Reay, then returned to the Banks Peninsula area by 1849. However, his description as being 'of the Motuka tribe' does not fit with other known information about Tamati Tikao. See: Minson, Marian. Art as evidence : the enigma of the Nelson Maori portraits, in: Turnbull Library Record, v.23, no.1 May 1990 for further information. Description: Shows south elevation of a wooden church building (purportedly All Saints' Church, Nelson) with a belfry and circular apse at the right. The walls have windows in the upper half but there is no clerestory as on the church as it was built in 1868. The final belfry tower was taller and was not built until 1890. This is possibly the first draft plan, of December 1867, later revised, March 1868. Title and identification of church supplied by the donor. See the history of the building of the church, in H F Ault's "Centennial history of All Saints' Parish, Nelson, 1862-1962". (Nelson, 1962). Quantity: 1 plan(s). Description: Head and shoulders profile portrait of Te Rangihaeata, a peacock feather in his top-knot, an albatross feather ear adornment and a fine flax cloak. One of a series of portraits of at least twenty Maori men and women done by Nelson artist Isaac Coates. Rangihaeata & Rauparaha, with their wives and whanau, visited Nelson in March 1843, the likely date of this portrait. The artist made various watercolour copies of this portrait, but this appears to be an earlier version than the one held in the Library's collection at A-286-014 and the one in the Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachussets. There is a (probably) still earlier version in the Bett Collection, Nelson Provincial Museum. Other Titles - Rangihaeata Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Scene aboard the Champion timber boat for Nelson from Wellington, with families bedded down on deck, 1852. A curtain in the middle divides some groups from others. The families appear to be lying in the bow of the ship. Some are already asleep, others are awake. One woman on the right is breastfeeding a baby. There are about 25 people lying down. Pearse has inscribed the front left figure as 'I myself' and the seated woman immediately beyond him as 'Scotch neighbour' Inscriptions: Album page - above image - title and date continue: the only kind of craft plying between these ports in these days and shame to the skipper for the accommodation. However in the next run from Sydney to New Zealand the Champion went down with all hands - the Skipper and crew were never heard of again. Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
