Description: Shows a view of the township of New Plymouth, looking south towards Paritutu. The Huatoki Stream can be seen bottom left. A man is on the beach, possibly with a fishing rod in hand. In the middle ground on the left can be seen the Beach Hotel (later the Terminus and later still the Tasman Hotel), Richmond Cottage, Custom House and boatsheds. Two boats carrying people are approaching the shore. A tall flagstaff flying a red ensign are seen on the left 'Frank' probably relates to Francis Hamar Arden, Hamar Humphrey's son; Bessie (and possibly also Sarah) was Frank's sister Rona Dornia Robson was the granddaughter of Taranaki sawmiller James Robson A similar, earlier work by Arden held at Puke Ariki, dated ca 1860s Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - H H Arden; Verso - top left - For Frank and Sarah, with Bessie's love [in pencil]; Verso - top left - Miss Dormia Robson, 29 Princes St / Auck.
