Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Journal records his work cutting and forming tracks between Canterbury and the West Coast; meeting with groups of Maori and prospectors; a visit to John Henry Whitcombe's grave at the Taramakau River (he had been drowned on a similar expedition in May 1863) and the wet weather. There is mention of a Maori guide, Jack Tainui, re-burying Whitcombe and marking the grave with two paddles (page 28). Farmer and gold prospector who arrived from Australia to farm in 1860. Leader of a working party contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to cut a track to the West Coast, via the Hurunui Plains, Harper Pass and Lake Brunner to the Grey River mouth. Howitt, together with two other members of his party, Robert Little and Henry Miller, disappeared on Lake Brunner on 27 Jun 1863 (the journal ends 20 Jun). Description: There are two groups of letters, those of George Burnett and those of his brother James Burnett. George Burnett letters from the Victory at sea and shortly after his arrival in Auckland, 1850-1851, includes a letter-diary of the voyage. James Burnett letters from Auckland, Whangarei, Nelson and Grey River area. The latter 1860-1861 when he accompanied von Haast on his West Coast expedition. Also a letter written by Martha Jane Burnett (wife of James) dated 4 Sep 1852 in which she describes the voyage of the Joseph Fletcher, 1852. Includes family tree showing the descendants of James Burnett (1785-1851) and his wife Barbara Johnston (d 1861) George Burnett arrived on the Victory in Jan 1851 at Auckland. His younger brother James, a surveyor, arrived on the Joseph Fletcher at Auckland, Oct 1852, accompanied by his mother, 2 sisters, and brother William. Description: David Jones born Wanganui, 1914. Outlines family background - maternal grandparents from County Cork, Ireland - mother born in Greymouth - Uncle Jack became Mayor of Greymouth. Talks about the West Coasters. Recalls the Chinese gold miners and the differences in their work conditions from the other miners. Describes growing up in Wanganui; family house in Keith Street; Masonic Lodge; father's fear of fire as a result of the great Raetihi bush fire in 1918. Recalls going to work in an electroplater's shop and at the age of 15 `doing a man's work for a slave wage'. Talks about the lack of a trade union covering electroplaters in Wanganui and the subsequent working conditions. Explains electroplating process. Moved to Wellington and recalls decent pay and work conditions and his first union meeting at the age of 22 when he requested that the Wanganui and Palmerston North area be covered by the engineers union which did eventuate. Explains that conditions had improved on moving back to his former job. Other recollections include: fishing; native school, Putiki; Maori canoes on the river; cherry trees planted by Mother Mary Aubert; influenza epidemic 1918; end of World War I celebrations; 1920s earthquake; big flood in 1926 and Foster's Hotel fire. Recalls declaration of World War II and joining Expeditionary Force, travelling in `The New Amsterdam' to Sydney, then to Singapore where they transferred to the `Aquatania' bound for Egypt. Was part of the 4th anti-aircraft regiment. Has vivid recall of events, relating many stories and mapping his movements during the war and comradeship. Talks about the dreadful living conditions during the war and gives his opinions on war. Mentions Battle of Alamein. Moved from the deserts to Bari, Italy and relates stories from the Sangro River. Talks about the fall of Cassino and experiences in Italy. Talks about life after the war and his research into rammed-earth building, using that method to build his own house which he describes. Talks about his book on the subject of rammed earth building that is being published at present. Recounts his involvement with RSA and Vietnam issues - was totally opposed to the Vietnam war. Gives reasons for living so long in Wanganui and the changes he has seen in the town. Recounts his involvement with the Four Seasons Theatre. Description: Des Nolan was born in Hokitika in 1920. Describes how his paternal grandparents arrived in Jackson's Bay from Ireland. Comments that the community was a `fiasco' and they moved to Okuru. Recalls growing up in the homestead there, his father's vegetable garden, eating wood pigeon, and his first schooling at home being taught by his cousin. Recalls fishing and playing music for entertainment. Describes high school education at St Kevin's in Oamaru. Recalls riding out to Haast on a horse and then going by bus and train to Oamaru. Mentions that prior to this he had been out of Haast once to Hokitika on the `Gael' (boat) to go to the dentist. Notes that the `Gael' came up the Okuru River about every two months. Mentions that mail was by pack horse every fortnight and the priest and minister came every few months. Comments on trips made over the Paringa Saddle when people were sick and had to leave the area. Mentions that Mrs Nolan and Mrs McPherson helped with births. Comments on the difficulty for women moving in to the area. Describes changes with the air service which meant that conditions such as appendicitis were no longer so dangerous. Mentions Dr Jean McLean. Describes meeting and marrying Eileen in Hokitika and their honeymoon in Christchurch. Mentions movies once a week at Haast and occasional dances. Describes cattle farming as their main livelihood. Discusses the cattle being driven along the Paringa Track to market. Describes mustering. Mentions cattle were originally driven to Whataroa and later to Cromwell. Mentions the butter and cheese factory, cheesemaking and their 160 cows. Describes the difficulty of weather conditions and drownings in the area. Describes stopping flying in 1970 after the road went through. Mentions that his wife Eileen nursed in Hokitika, ran a whitebait buying business and a motel in Okuru after the road went through.
