A flagstaff flying the Union Jack is alongside the near wall of Barrett's Hotel Copy of a wash drawing 'Barrett's Hotel, Port Nicholson' owned by the Royal Society Tasmania, and held in the collection of the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum, Hobart The 'raupo house' had a roof made of raupo and was said to be the first house built on Thorndon Beach (Thorndon Quay). Description: Photographic essay on the men's public toilets in Wellington City. Featured are those at the intersection of Taranaki Street and Courtenay Place, those in Ballance Street, and those in Thorndon Quay near the intersection with Tinakori Road. The Taranaki St/Courtenay Place toilets opened for use in 1911 and they were closed 27 January 1999. They have not been demolished as the building is listed in the council's heritage inventory as historically signifigant. They are still (as at 2002) awaiting some sort of reuse. The other two public toilets are still in use. This collection also contains documentation relating to these public toilets in the form of news paper articles, and Ian Kember's own notes Arrangement: Negatives at 35mm, 36989 to 35mm, 36998 Quantity: 36 colour original photographic print(s).

Description: Transparencies of industrial structures in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the subject (type of structure and sometimes name of owner/company/building) and location. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Title transcribed from item. Some slides are not dated. Arrangement: The first of two boxes of slides labelled 'Industrial'. Transparencies were arranged in a 6-row, 50 slides per row, plastic case, and slides of similar structures were grouped together. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies. Description: Three illustrations of scenes in the Wellington area. The top view looks north along the beach (now Thorndon Quay) towards Kaiwharawhara, with several houses along the beach, including the roof and front garden of Major Baker's. The central view, probably at Taita, shows the banks of the Hutt River, with Maori leaving Maraenuku Pā [Makahinuku Pa], overseen by soldiers. The palisades of the pa are to the right, with other buildings and canoes in the distance along the riverbank. The lowest view shows 'The red house' or the Barracks in Thorndon Quay, with soldiers marching up the slope towards them, another house and Tiakiwai Pa (described in Brees' text as 'Jackawai') in the middle distance.
