Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: Journal of the voyage of the Armed Tender, HMS Chatham, captained by Lieutenant William Robert Broughton. HMS Chatham was one of the ships under the command of Captain Vancouver in his exploration of the Pacific and of the North American coast. Describes the voyage from England via Cape of Good Hope to Australia and New Zealand; activity at Dusky Sound, the discovery of the Chatham Islands, the voyage to Tahiti, with descriptions of the inhabitants, and of the Bounty mutineers. The voyage to Hawaii, with a description of the islands and their inhabitants, followed by the voyage to Canada and the Californian coast, before returning to Hawaii. Bell gives full accounts of the places and inhabitants visited. Description: One of the several logs from the first voyage, beginning on 26 May 1768 and finishing 6 Oct 1770. For further description see J C Beaglehole, "The Journals of Captain James Cook....', Cambridge 1955, Volume 1, pp ccxxxvii-ccxxxviii) This log was originally attributed by the Library to Cook's astronomer, Charles Green, based on a statement in an early NSW Library Cook bibliography. However, that was disproved by J C Beaglehole in his discussion of this and other logs in the introduction to his 'The Journals of Captain James Cook....', volume 1 (Cambridge 1955, pp ccxxxvii-ccxxxviii). Although he does not discount a connection with Green he concludes it is best described as of anonymous creation. Description: Reminiscences describing his family background from the time of his birth in Tasmania, his childhood, moving to Melbourne, first jobs and finally going to sea. He writes of the vessels he served on (listed under Name below), his shipboard companions, their various cargoes and ports of call and describes in detail daily routines on board and onshore. One of his voyages as an apprentice was on the `Water lily' to Rarotonga, Tahiti, Archew [Atiu], Penrhyn, Starbuck and Auckland, New Zealand. He visited most New Zealand ports on coastal traders and was also involved in trans-Tasman vessels. He concludes with descriptions of his family's settling in the Bay of Plenty region on a farm on the Rangitaiki River and later at Kopuriki. Talks about joining ATC, enlisting with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, training, resentment towards Americans in New Zealand, overseas service as a gunner in 14 Ventura Squadron, jungle training, being based at American camps in the Philippines and Japanese bombing raids. Gives his impressions of American servicemen, recalls the segregation of black and white servicemen. Talks about events in Auckland. Mentions rape. Reflects on returning to Wellington and Waikura.
