Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Shows Maori group sitting near flagpole at left, smoking long pipes, other Maori figures and three thatched buildings on the foreshore. On centre foreshore is Messrs Ridgways and Co's wharf and stores. At right is Willis Street with the Southern Cross Hotel and further back the Ship Hotel. On the other side of the bay are the Customhouse Office, Post Office, Waitt's Wharf and stores, John Wade's store, the Exchange, and Rhodes's Wharf and store. Willis and Co's store is in the left background near Te Aro Pa. In the distance are Mount Albert and Mount Cook. Description: The preliminary watercolour for Barraud's more finished version ("Wellington from Brooklyn" C-007-011) showing Te Aro flat with Waitangi Creek meandering through it on the right, a low hill in the foreground (the lower slopes between Mount Cook and Brooklyn) with Te Aro Pa visible on the shore to the right and houses, businesses and churches, more densely settled closer to Clay Point, the cliff face by the sea on the left, with Plimmer's Ark visible at its foot at the water's edge. The larger building near the waterfront may be the Maori Chapel. The road passing diagonally across Te Aro flat slightly right of centre is most likely to be Cuba Street. Thorndon is visible in the distance on the left. The large church on the left is St Peter's in Willis Street. Reproduced in Louis E. Description: A view of Wellington, looking up The Terrace, with gardens, fences and houses, two people walking up the road, the harbour on the left and Mt Cook and part of Mt Victoria in the background, along with a few houses on the Te Aro foreshore, possibly including Te Aro Pa. On the verso is an outline pencil sketch of the contours of the hills with the harbour from the same viewpoint. Attributed to White on stylistic grounds, especially the liberal use of red gouache. The watercolour is titled in the hand of T. B. Collinson, but is not drawn in his style. The next three sketches in this group of loose sketches are signed Fred. J. White. Description: View from Hill Street area looking south past the garden of Government House (now the site of the Beehive) on the far left, (with what is probably Alfred Domett's garden in the foreground), and towards the original St Paul's Church (Museum Street), along Lambton Quay (the shoreline) and The Terrace (marked as Constitution Hill here), with Te Aro, including the Pa and Mount Cook, with the military barracks in the distance. Stables are also indicated written on the roof of a building beyond the fence of Government House and above Lambton Quay.
