Description: Several images on one pagle. At the top of the page, two shacks and a cabbage tree, 'Smith's station' at the mouth of the Waianakarua, looking inland, with the river to the right. Left, below that, Taiaroa standing on the beach, staff in hand, appearing to be speaking, observed by several people lying down. The title refers to Rauparaha's conquest of the east coast and to the local paramount chief's defiance while Rauparaha is safely in the North Island on Kapiti. Below on the right, three drawings of the same man's head in a bonnet, and a right-angles, a coastal view looking north along the beach from Onekakara, Moeraki, with several canoes pulled up on shore to the left. At the bottom left of the page, a cryptic drawing possibly of a rocky outcrop, titled Penal Sett. Description: Reminiscences written in 1910 of Mieville's life in New Zealand, mainly on Glenham Station in the Mataura Valley, Southland, and in Dunedin; transcribed and indexed by Marsha Donaldson. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted. Description: Identifies Bluff Hill; Mr Wills [i.e. the artist, seated sketching to one side, a sunhat on his head]; John McCormack's farmhouse with outhouses in the centre foreground, and in the background, Moeraki, Little Kuri Wood and Te Kuri Wood. Appears to be two or possibly three landscapes on top of one another, with the lowest view looking along Moeraki Beach from the south and the highest view looking along the beach from the north.
