The packaging was removed upon arrival into the Library, in order to ascertain the content, and to preserve the cards in perpetuity. Date of publication estimated from the donor's account of a visit to Rotorua. The price of the cards was in sterling currency and therefore dates from 1967 or earlier. Description: Mounted images with annotations from Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels tramping and travelling from Franz Josepf Glacier to various locations in the North Island. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The photographs show aerial images of the South Island including Franz Josef Glacier and snowfields, Fox Glacier and nearby mountains and bush, and a series of images of Bert Salmon and Mary Hansen on the ice at Fox Glacier. Also includes views of Fox River, the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, Buller Gorge, a suspension bridge over the Buller River, and farmland near Nelson. - Photographs of the North Island show Chateau Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, views of Mount Ngauruhoe, including a copy of a photograph of the eruption of Ngauruhoe on 9 December 1934, and group portraits of Irene Booth, Mary Hansen, Eric Keehn, and Reg Booth playing in the snow on Mount Ruapehu. - Other images show views of the Waikato River at Huka Falls, the Aratiatia Rapids, and geothermal activity around Taupo and Rotorua. Description: Shows a carved Maori memorial alongside a tree trunk. This image may be based on the one found in Padovan's "Te Ika a Maui" (1955), plate 8, at Whakarewarewa Pa, Rotorua. The memorial is composed of a section of canoe erected in a vertical position with scroll designs painted on it. "The small house on top would appear a modern innovation of the ancient whata, or small store house set on a pole for housing tapu objects" (Tui Terence Barrow's "An introductory essay on Maori art", Wellington 1955, accompanying Padovan's "Te Ika a Maui"). Title taken from the same image which is reproduced in Padovan's "The Maori as an artist" (Wellington, 1957), plate 2. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin.
