Description: The diary covers from 1 Jun 1893 to 1 Sep 1894 and includes a voyage Herries made on the `Kaikoura' to New Zealand to visit his brother, William, of Te Aroha. Herries made almost daily entries and during his working week he noted when he was in chambers, who he dealt with, and especially recorded social occasions He left for NZ on 20 July 1893, reaching Hobart 1 Sep and NZ 6 Sep, and returned to England on 20 Jan 1894 on the `Mararoa' to Sydney and the `Ville de la Ciotat' to Marseilles, arriving there 2 Mar and returning overland to England. Description: Elsie May Bartle; Shipboard diary of her travels from Norfolk, England to Wellington, New Zealand during November 1890 on board the New Zealand Steamship Co ship SS Kaikoura. A daily record of the voyage kept by 11 year old Elsie Bartle travelling with her family in steerage class, and transcribed and printed by her granddaughter E M Price. Diary entries from 11 November 1890, the day the family left Norfolk for London, till they arrived at Lyttelton on 1 Jan 1891. Elsie gives a full description of events on board, including Neptune's visit on Crossing the Line and Christmas Day celebrations. Included in the booklet is an introduction by E M Price, a photograph of the family taken prior to their departure, a copy of a page from Elsie's diary and an index to people, ships, places and events. Description: Four prize-wining essays from the 1994 and 1995 GRINZ competitions by Jennifer Pierson (on Charles Pierson), Vaudine Barnes (on Frances Clarke), Antonia Jones (on Elizabeth Pickering, nee Wooding); and Marjorie Harris (on George Edmonds) `Boom and bust; a businessman on the goldfields' by Jennifer Pierson. The story of American-born Charles Anson Crocker Herrick Philetous Pierson who arrived in New Zealand about 1860 and spent the rest of his life on the South Island goldfields as a cordial maker. In his forties he was forced to abandon his properties at Stafford and begin again in Kumara. `Elizabeth Wooding, 1854-1920' by Antonia Jones. The story of Elizabeth Wooding who came to Canterbury on the Zealandia in 1858 as an assisted immigrant with her parents and brother John. She married Richard Pickering at Kaiapoi in 1874. `Frances Clarke nee Stelfox, 1847-1924; raising a family in Russia and New Zealand' by Vaudine M Barnes. The story of Frances Clarke who arrived in New Zealand on the `Kaikoura' in 1886 accompanied by eight of her nine children; her family background, growing up in Northwich, marriage to engineer Thomas Plummer Clarke and move to Russia. Her life in the British community centred on Moscow, raising her family and moving from one textile town to another, migration to New Zealand, life in Onehunga, Auckland, the move to Waihi and later life. Includes photographs `The Labouring immigrant' by Marjorie Harris, the story of immigrant George Edmonds who arrived in New Zealand in 1863 on the `Brother's Pride' with his wife Martha Johnson. Description: Describes his voyage from England to New Zealand on `Tasmanian' and transshipping to `Kaikoura' in 1868, brief visits to Wellington and Nelson, farm life at German Bay, Banks Peninsula, and return to England for his wife and family. Includes Rebecca's diary of the voyage to Lyttelton with her husband, Robert, and family on the Ceres, 21 Feb-20 Jun 1870. Rebecca continued her daily diary until 19 Oct, noting progress of farm stock and the output from her dairy. Recipes also included.
